Getting started with animal tracking

Regional steward at Maine Coast Heritage Trust

Resident of: St. George

February 2023

My journey with animal tracking began through my work as an environmental educator. For years, and across 13 states, I led tours and nature hikes. My job for much of that time was to go exploring in the woods with kids, and my goal was to lead the best hike I could. Having knowledge about the environment around me made me a better leader, and I always carried field guides with me. I’ve spent many years tracking the animals where I lived, from the coasts of Santa Cruz, California, to Vinalhaven, Maine, where I discovered the wonders of our state’s otters and tracking in the snow. It only got better when my wife and I moved to St. George and experienced the diversity of predators on the mainland. This discipline has been years in the making, and now I go to bed at night with anticipation of all there is to learn about the critters living around us. The resources below helped me when I got started—and still do. I hope they can be helpful for you in your own adventures, too.
