Investigating Maine’s lighthouses

Author and local historian

It took almost 20 years for the Friends of the Wood Island Lighthouse to restore the fifth-oldest lighthouse in Maine to its 1906 appearance. In 2020, I was asked to investigate the life of Charles Albert Burke, the man who tended the lighthouse from 1905 to 1914. My research led to an interest in the keepers who preceded Keeper Burke and then to those who followed. I never imagined that this effort would lead to the writing of my book, Wood Island Lighthouse: Stories From the Edge of the Sea. The resources that follow are among those that I found most helpful in strengthening my overall understanding of lighthouses and the men and women who watched over them.
